Environmental Police Officer Jobs Available

Need 30 College Credits, Military Duty or Related Experience to Qualify

The city is hiring Environmental Police Officers to work for the Department of Environmental Protection outside New York City.

Applications are accepted continuously. Filing is open through Jan. 29, 2010. There is a $30 application fee. The multiple-choice test is scheduled for March 13, 2010.

Rose to $44K

The current minimum salary is $25,631 per year, based on a prior exam notice. Those who reach Assignment Level I will receive salary increments that bring their pay to $44,742 after six years. Positions may be located in Westchester, Dutchess, Greene, Sullivan, Putnam, Delaware, Ulster, Rockland, Orange or Schoharie counties.

To qualify, candidates must have a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent plus 30 college credits with at least a 2.0 cumulative index, or a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and have completed two years of honorable full-time U.S. military service or one year of law-enforcement experience.

They must pass a medical, a physical and a drug screening to be employed.

Applicants must be 16½ years of age by the date of examination. They need to be at least 20 years old but no older than 35 to be appointed. They must be U.S. citizens. They must have a driver’s license, speak English and live in the city or any of the counties where the jobs are.

What Test Measures

The multiple-choice exam tests for written comprehension, written expression, memorization, problem sensitivity, deductive reasoning, inductive reasoning, information ordering, spatial orientation and visualization. Applicants need to score at least 70 percent to pass.

Under supervision, an Environmental Police Officer patrols and secures water supply facilities and lands, and monitors the environmental integrity of watershed areas. Environmental Police Officers patrol the watershed areas, installations and other sites maintained by the Department of Environmental Protection.

They work outdoors in all kinds of weather while walking or standing in an assigned area during a tour. They also must drive or sit in a patrol car while remaining alert, run after fleeing suspects, and carry an injured adult without assistance.
