School Safety Agent Posts Open At $31G

Apply Until Oct. 20 For Dec. 19 Exam; Need H.S. Diploma Hazardous Conditions And Weekend Work May Be Part of the Job

The city is hiring School Safety Agents to police the education system, the Department of Citywide Administrative Services has announced.

Applications will be accepted up to Oct. 20. An exam will be held on Dec. 19. The application fee is $35. The current minimum salary is $31,259 per year. A class of 186 School Safety Agents will graduate in December.

Job Requirements

School Safety Agents may be required to work shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. New hires must be city residents within three months of the date of appointment but after two years on the job have the option of living in any of six neighboring state counties. There is a drug screening. Applicants must be able to speak and understand English.

To be considered for appointment, applicants must have a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent. Those educated outside the United States must have their foreign education evaluated.

Applicants must be 21 years of age by the date of appointment to become a School Safety Agent. They will be required to pass a physical test, a medical assessment and a psychological assessment. The written multiple choice exam will test for written comprehension, written expression, memorization, problem sensitivity, deductive reasoning, inductive reasoning, information ordering, spatial orientation and visualization. Applicants must score at least 70 percent to pass, and the score will determine an order on an eligible list.

They will be investigated prior to employment, and they must pay a $75 fee for fingerprint screening.

Primary Duties

School Safety Agents patrol designated areas of school buildings and surrounding areas; identify and prevent infiltration of unlawful or prohibited items through scanning; give routine information to visitors and direct them to the proper personnel and offices; request identification of and remove from the premises any unauthorized persons; aid sick and injured students, and call for medical, police or fire assistance, when needed.

School Safety Agents are expected to work through ongoing school construction projects, including asbestos removal, to work in non-air conditioned areas during the summer months and to walk school perimeters in all types of weather, among other duties.
