Obama's Plan Will Work
      To the Editor: The country is now wrestling with health care. The present system is broken unless you are an integral part of it. President Obama has welcomed debate on the issue. Those involved in the present system don't want change. Why should they, when they are cleaning up? So they will not allow debate.

No Fan of Mayoral Control
      To the Editor: I was perturbed by the article about the State Senate vote (Aug. 7 issue) regarding reinstatement of mayoral control of the New York City Schools. David Sims, your education reporter, said in his lead paragraph that the Senate would meet to pass the bill on Aug. 6. If passage is a foregone conclusion, then why vote at all?

Toussaint's Latest Victim
      To the Editor: J.P. Patafio (Aug. 7 article) has become the latest victim of Roger Toussaint. Looks like TWU Local 100 Recording Secretary Darlyne Lawson is slated to become Toussaint's next victim. But really, when you think about it, all 38,000 of us are victims of his leadership.

Great, But Why So Long?
      To the Editor: In reading a front-page article of the Unionist (Local 371 of District Council 37's newspaper) called, "Perseverance Pays Off for New Day Workers," I am genuinely concerned about the union leadership and its effectiveness.
