      To The Editor: Now that municipal unions have agreed with the city on a funding plan to save health benefits and forestall layoffs by three months, it's time for a full exploration of long-term solutions to the budget shortfall.

      To The Editor: With a characteristic contempt for the electorate that would make an ancient Roman Emperor recoil in shock, Mayor Bloomberg will imminently close four more fire companies. By the end of the year, numerous others throughout the city will also be closed according to his plan. In the past, such enervating behavior would have been political suicide.
