Honor FDNY for Aiding Oldest Jewish Cemetery

The Fire Department May 17 was honored by Congregation Shearith Israel, the nation's oldest Jewish congregation, during a May 17 memorial service in tribute to congregants who fought in the Revolutionary War.

During the service at the 326-yearold Chatham Square Cemetery, members of what is known as the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue thanked the FDNY and presented a donation to the FDNY Foundation for the swift response in protecting the cemetery during a major fire nearby earlier this year.

Those in attendance placed flags at the graves of those who fought in the Revolutionary War and subsequent military conflicts.
