Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1056 April 2 endorsed City Council Transportation Committee Chair John Liu for City Comptroller, becoming the second New York City Transit union to support the Queens lawmaker.
"He stepped up to the bullying tactics of the [Metropolitan Transportation Authority] and fought for improved bus services," Local 1056 President Ed Figueroa said in a statement. "He has helped to ensure worker safety measures at our work sites."
'Found 2 Sets of Books'
Mr. Figueroa added that "Mr. Liu was the first elected official to force the MTA to review its accounting practices and found the second set of books they used to deceive New Yorkers. We need a Comptroller who understands the needs of everyday people as we struggle to keep our jobs, put food on the table and pay our bills."
Local 1056 represents NYC Transit bus workers in Queens.
As the Transportation Committee Chair, Mr. Liu has been a vocal critic of what he has called a lack of transparency in the MTA's finances and an inability to make substantial service improvements.
Last month, Mr. Liu received the endorsement of Transport Workers Union Local 100, the largest union representing MTA workers.
