State Motor Equipment Mechanic Posts Open
Jobs Here Pay $34G Plus Location Bonus; No Written Exam Need 4 Years' Experience, Less With Specified Education Courses
The state Department of Civil Service has an ongoing need for Motor Equipment Mechanics in the Department of Transportation and other agencies throughout the state, particularly downstate and in Monroe County. Starting salary is $33,977. Applications are being accepted continuously; exams are given periodically. Appointees who work in New York City or in Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, or Westchester counties will receive an additional $1,264 annual downstate adjustment. Appointees who work in Dutchess, Orange, or Putnam counties will receive an additional $632 Mid-Hudson adjustment. There is a $20 non-refundable processing fee. At the time of filing, applicants must have four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic. Applicants must include specific types of repair work they have performed, and the vehicles involved. They can also qualify with an associate's degree in automotive or diesel repair technology. Acceptable Substitutes Completion of a technical or vocational program, such as Board of Cooperative Educational Services (B.O.C.E.S.), in automotive or diesel technology or automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for one year of experience. Graduation from a one-year post-high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for up to two years of experience. At the time of appointment, applicants must have a basic tool kit and certification by the Department of Motor Vehicles to conduct New York State inspections. They will be subject to drug tests. Some agencies require that appointees have an appropriate commercial driver's license, or any additional qualification determined by the agency, within three months of appointment. Physical and medical examinations may also be required. Applicants are responsible for clinical laboratory fees. Motor Equipment Mechanics are responsible for diagnosing and repairing vehicles and equipment, including engines, transmissions, wiring, hydraulic systems, steering wheels, suspension mechanisms, body, cab and frame components, and be able to conduct New York State inspections. Additional duties may include diagnosing and repairing anti-lock braking systems and air conditioning, and cutting and welding. In small shops, they may supervise Maintenance Assistants, Maintenance Helpers and others. Grading System There is no written test. Evaluations and scores are based upon the education and experience described in the application form. If approved, applicants will be sent a supplemental questionnaire that will be used to rate education and experience in the automotive, heavy truck and/or heavy equipment repair vocation.
