To The Editor: This is in response to the letter from Behrouz Fathi, et. al, entitled "'375' Head Must Step Aside" in the Jan. 2, 2009 edition of The Chief. Prior to the publishing of this signed letter to The Chief, an anonymous letter was distributed accusing two Local 375 officers, Vincent Sawinski and Jon Forster, of misusing Local 375 funds. More ... To The Editor: This year the city is paying $6.2 billion to the five city pension funds. This is 18 percent of the city's payroll. You don't need to be an actuary to know that this situation is out of control. This huge cost is due to chronic underfunding, bad investment decisions, and increasing benefits. Many of those increases the city approved of. More ... To The Editor: As reported in The Chief (Dec. 26 issue), gubernatorial proposals to modify public-sector employee pension conditions and requirements are coming at the workforce with the velocity of a speeding freight train. More ... To The Editor: Ari Paul's report (Jan. 2 issue) on the Bus Operators' Plexiglass barriers is a good one. But I fear a Straw Man is being grown to deflect this crucial working-class issue and possibly make the pilot project a failure. More ... To The Editor: I have an idea how to save some money at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Every year many lawsuits are filed against the MTA's agencies. Some of them are well-justified, others are frivolous. Some are asking for millions of dollars, others, just for several hundred dollars. More ... To The Editor: Thank you District Attorney Robert Morgenthau and his staff for the thorough investigation of the Deutsche Bank building fire. Mayor Bloomberg now states, "The buck stops with me."
