Where Jobs Are Locally

Positions are open in Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, Harlem, White Plains, Albany, Binghamton, Elmira, Kingston, Queensbury and Rochester. Work is usually confined to a local office, but overnight travel may be required.

Recruits must be U.S. citizens and have a bachelor's degree with a 3.0 grade point average or higher, or 3.5 or higher in their major. Alternatively, equivalent work experience or a combination of education and related work experience, such as evaluating assets, equity and credit; collecting delinquent payments; or counseling individuals on tax-filing and paying obligations may qualify a person for the job.

Men born after Dec. 31, 1959 are required to have filed their Selective Service Registration.

Revenue Officers are trained in both tax law and collection techniques necessary for the collection of delinquent taxes and overdue tax returns. Duties include conducting research, interviews, investigations and analysis of financial information for assigned cases, often at the taxpayer's home or business. Each officer will be assigned an inventory of cases, which provides the opportunity for work on varied situations with different types of taxpayers. Revenue Officers also counsel taxpayers on their obligations and determine how they can best resolve their delinquencies and ensure their rights are protected.

The Small Business/Self Employed Division of the IRS, which serves about seven million small business as well as corporations and partnerships with assets of $10 million or less, will employ the Revenue Officers.

Interested candidates can apply on-line at www.usajobs.opm.gov. Those with questions should call the IRS HR specialist at 801-620-6108.
