JFK Customs Officer Indicted for Murder

A John F. Kennedy International Airport-based U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Officer was indicted Aug. 18 in the fatal shooting a Queens real-estate broker.

Officer Eric Alke was accused of firing a .38 caliber revolver at Adrian Moldovan, mortally wounding him in the chest, in June. Mr. Alke was charged with second-degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide. If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison.

The officer was said to have been intoxicated when he drew his weapon. Mr. Moldovan was working with Mr. Alke's landlord at his Forest Hills home at the time of the incident.

"As a Federal officer trained in the safety and handling of weapons, the defendant should have known better than to draw a gun absent an imminent threat to the safety of himself or others," Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown said in a statement. "Sadly, this case is a grim lesson why guns and drinking are a lethal mixture."
