SCHOOL SAFETY AGENT, CLERICAL EXAMS SET FOR 2009

Stationary Engineer Among 102 on City's List; Deckhand, Police, Correction Officer Jobs Offered

Exams for School Safety Agent, Clerical Aide and Fire Protection Inspector head the list of 102 civil service hiring and promotion tests the city is scheduled to administer during the next year.

Other popular exams due to be held include those for Stationary Engineer, Deckhand, Construction Project Manager, Fingerprint Technician Trainee and Assistant Gardener.

Promotion exams for Police Sergeant and Lieutenant are scheduled, as well as tests for Train Service Supervisor, Associate Fire Protection Inspector, Associate Traffic Enforcement Agent, Laboratory Microbiologist and Emergency Medical Specialist-Paramedic.

Continuous Filing for CO, Police Jobs

Filing is now continuous for Police Officer and Correction Officer, which means individuals can apply at any time and be assigned to take a test a few months later. The next Correction Officer exam is Nov. 1 for those who have applied by Aug. 15. Police Officer exams will be offered from Oct. 17 through Oct. 26 for those who apply before Sept. 15. Exams for other jobs are scheduled all the way through to the Oct. 17, 2009 promotion test for Fire Lieutenant.

A Probation Officer exam is scheduled for Dec. 13, with filing to open on Sept. 3 and close Sept. 23. The starting salary is $38,820 and maximum pay is $56,204.

Based on a prior exam notice, by the last day of filing candidates must have a graduate degree in social work, education, law, sociology, psychology, criminology, or rehabilitation counseling.

According to the test announcement, individuals can also apply with a bachelor's degree and two years of full-time work-related experience in casework or counseling in a similar recognized setting. All candidates must have at least a bachelor's degree. Various combinations of experience and education are also considered qualifying; applicants should consult the exam notice for a complete list.

Filing will open on Sept. 3 and run through Oct. 21 for the School Safety Agent exam, which will be held on Dec. 20. The starting salary is $28,901.

School Agent Duties, Requirements

School Safety Agents provide security and ensure the safety of students, faculty and visitors in city public school buildings.

Candidates must be 21 and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Candidates must meet certain physical and medical requirements prior to appointment, including drug/alcohol screening and psychological assessment. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and residents of New York City.

The following schedule includes exams and the filing dates, with a "C" denoting an open-competitive test and a "P" a promotion exam. Promotion exams are open only to eligible employees. Where there is no exam date given, either the date has not been determined or applicants will be evaluated on education and experience.
