TWU's Strange Priorities In reading Roger Toussaint and his paid flunkies attack The Chief as the source of dissension within Transport Workers Union Local 100, one has to wonder (after laughing): don't these guys have better things to do? One would think with contract negotiations around the corner, dues payment at low levels, an MTA budget crisis and more members not trusting their union every day, Toussaint and company should be pretty busy right about now. Apparently, they have a lot of free time. But we must understand that in this regime, what they cannot control they must try to discredit. Those they cannot buy off, they must make an example of. What I cannot understand is how some good people, many of whom I have dealt with over the years, can continue to support such a mean-spirited and hapless TWU Local 100 leadership which, by the way, has a terrible track record in almost every area: union democracy, contract negotiations, transparency in business dealings. You name it, they stink at it. They even bungled the 2005 strike. Is it all about the money? Shame on you; what about your self respect? By the way, isn't one of the first things a totalitarian regime does is to attack the free press? What's next? Loyalty oaths and a secret police? Just asking.
