The Chief-Leader/Michel Friang
Former City Councilman Stanley E. Michels, pictured here during a July 24 ceremony naming the promenade at the Heather Garden in Fort Tryon Park in his honor, died Aug. 1 at age 75 after a two-year bout with cancer. Mr. Michels, who represented upper Manhattan in the Council for 24 years, secured tens of millions of dollars for the restoration and improvement of parks in his district and was a sponsor of numerous measures to curtail smoking in public places. Funeral services were held Aug. 3; he is survived by his wife of 48 years, Molly, three children and three grandchildren. |
