Shutter Mobile Postal Offices in 2 Boroughs As Economy Measure

The U.S. Postal Service will cease operating mobile postal units in Manhattan and The Bronx July 26 in an effort to save money on a service plagued by high fuel costs and competition from private couriers.

The move will transfer 33 Mobile Clerks to positions inside postal buildings, but one of the workers, who spoke conditioned on anonymity, said that many workers opposed the change, as they wanted to keep their jobs on the streets. The 23-year veteran also argued that the mobile units were integral to serving the public.

"The Post Office can't really accommodate everybody," she said. "I don't want to lose these trucks. They have been a great help throughout this community."

Some of the workers are distributing flyers urging the public to pressure elected officials to oppose the change. The New York Metro Area Postal Union has not contested the elimination of the units in the two boroughs.
