ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN POSTS OFFERED BY STATE The starting salary is $25,989. Appointees who work in New York City, Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland or Westchester counties will receive an additional $1,302 annual downstate adjustment. Appointees who work in Dutchess, Orange or Putnam counties will receive an additional $651 annual mid-Hudson adjustment. Applications must be postmarked by Aug. 18. The written test will be held on Sept. 20. The filing fee is $20. Background Needed The job requires one year of experience in engineering, engineering technology, engineering management technology, architecture or architecture technology, environmental technology, electronics, electronics technology, landscape design, materials laboratory technology, drafting or surveying and graduation from high school or possession of a diploma from a recognized educational authority. Alternatively, an applicant may have 18 semester credit hours of college coursework in mathematics, physical science, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, or electronics. A graduation from a high school technical education program in CAD/CAM, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics or electronics will also qualify an applicant for this position. Engineering Technicians perform routine technical tasks, including taking measurements, checking computations, collecting and compiling data, reducing notes, drafting maps and plans, making simple calculations and performing inspections of small and relatively simple construction projects or portions of projects. The tasks may be performed in the field with a bridge inspection team, or with an inspection or survey party, or in a drafting room, office or laboratory. Engineering Technicians may work with equipment used in surveying activities and assist with observations, inspections, laboratory tests and report preparation. They may also assist in monitoring environmental quality. What Exams Covers The written examination will test for knowledge, skills and/or abilities in five areas: methods and materials used in construction and maintenance of roads, bridges and other structures and facilities; basic surveying and computerized drafting techniques; basic mathematics, including geometric figures; mathematics, including algebra, geometry and trigonometry; and understanding and interpreting technical instructions and dimensional drawings. The exam also includes some technical computations in both English and metric units. Conversion tables will be provided. Those who have not taken courses in trigonometry or had experience in surveying might find this test difficult. A score of 70 or higher is needed to pass the exam. Rank on the eligible list will be determined after adding any wartime veterans' and Civil Service Law Section 85-a credits to the final passing score.
