276 New Fire Graduates; Had 23 Weeks of Training

The Fire Department June 30 graduated the second class of Probationary Firefighters to complete Fire Academy training since 10 extra weeks were added to the regimen.

The Chief-Leader/Michael O'Kane OUT OF THE FRYING PAN: Among the 276 graduates from the Fire Academy last week, 35 had served in the U.S. military, including Probationary Firefighter Christopher Little, who did not attend the ceremony because he was serving with the Marines in Iraq. His parents accepted his diploma.

"You are one of the first classes to receive the exceptional 23 weeks of training at the Academy, and I know it has prepared you for any type of emergency you may encounter," Mayor Bloomberg told the 276 graduates during the ceremony in Colden Auditorium at Queens College. "As you move forward in your careers, you will be able to use these skills to make the city even safer for future generations."

Absent With an Excuse

Probationary Firefighter Christopher Little did not attend the ceremony, as he was sent to Iraq last month for a second tour of duty with the Marines. He met with Mayor Bloomberg in a private ceremony in May. He was one of 35 in the class to have served in the U.S. military. This year's Valedictorian and Salutatorian were Shaun P. Scheurer and Gerard M. Reilly. The Physical Fitness Award went to Joseph J. Fronio.
