Name Sanit Garage For Worker Who Died on the Job

A Department of Sanitation garage has been named after a Sanitation Worker who died on the job in 2006, the department announced June 26.

The Brooklyn South District 13 Garage was renamed the Allen Gormely Garage in a ceremony last week. A 21-year veteran of that work station, Mr. Gormely suffered a massive heart attack Sept. 11, 2006 and died while on duty at Bay 46th St. He was 52 years old.

Mr. Gormely's son, Justin, and son-in-law, Anthony, who are both Sanitation Workers, attended the ceremony, as did Uniformed Sanitationmen's Association President Harry Nespoli.

"Sanitation Worker Gormely was beloved not only by his family members, but also his fellow co-workers from Brooklyn South District 13," Sanitation Commissioner John J. Doherty said in a statement. "His passion and dedication to his job was well-known and appreciated by everyone who met him. Allen may be gone but the renaming of the district garage he loved so much will live on in his name.
