Lab Tech Requirements To qualify for Laboratory Technician, candidates must have 60 college credits, with 18 or more in biology, chemistry, physics, health science or science technology; or two years working in a laboratory or clinic performing lab tests and procedures; or a suitable combination of college and work experience. Proof of college credits is required with application. Depending on the assignment, candidates may be required to: be certified or eligible for certification as a Clinical Laboratory Technician; or be licensed or eligible for licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or as a Cytotechnologist, as defined under state law, by the time of assignment. What Job Entails Laboratory Technicians perform a variety of technical laboratory procedures in diagnostic, food, research and other laboratories, and may include testing and/or analyzing water, hazardous materials, viruses, radiation counts, blood, bacteria and food; preparing materials for testing, or assisting with autopsies. Record-keeping and maintaining a sanitary work environment may also be required. The written examination will test candidates' knowledge of basic laboratory equipment; basic principles of biology, chemistry and general science; laboratory procedures including simple first-aid, handling hazardous materials and metric measurements, and record-keeping.
