Support Grows To Curb Postal Contracting-Out

By ARI PAUL

A bill in the U.S. House of Representatives that would require the U.S. Postal Service to bargain with its unions before subcontracting labor gained eight more sponsors this month, including three from the New York State delegation.

WILLIAM BURRUS: Work done better in-house.
New York Reps. Steve Israel, Jerrold Nadler, and Edolphus Towns provided their support, the American Postal Workers Union announced April 17, along with U.S. Reps. Patrick Kennedy, Adam Schiff, Allyson Y. Schwartz, Niki Tsongas and Tim Walz.

"The union has demonstrated time and time again that outsourcing vital postal operations to private contractors often results in cost increases, inefficiency, and delayed service for consumers," APWU President William Burrus said earlier this month in a statement. "When the work is returned, costs decrease and efficiency improves."
