TRANSIT STATION AGENT FILING ABOUT TO BEGIN

Child Protective, Stock Worker And EMS Jobs; Apply March 5-25; 150 Annual 'Station' Job Openings

Filing is scheduled to open March 5 for an exam leading to Station Agent jobs at New York City Transit. Starting pay for the position is $17.65 an hour.

Filing also begins on that date for eight other hiring exams and five promotion tests. The last day to apply is March 25.

Other Jobs Available

The open-competitive titles are: Associate Project Manager, Child Protective Specialist, Emergency Medical Specialist-Paramedic, Hospital Care Investigator (Health and Hospitals Corporation), Housing Stock Worker, and Stock Worker (City University of New York and HHC).

The promotion jobs are: Associate Park Service Worker, Associate Project Manager, Emergency Medical Specialist-Paramedic, Maintenance Supervisor (Ventilation and Drainage), and Power Maintainer, Group B.

The multiple-choice test for Station Agent is set for June 14. NYC Transit employs roughly 3,350 Station Agents and hires 150 each year. "Over 600 were hired from the current list resulting from exam no. 3025," said Richard Chazen, the agency's Exam Administration Manager. "Because the current list expires March 30, 2009, we will probably not hire off the new list until after that date."

Based on the previous exam notice, by the last day of filing, applicants for the Station Agent hiring exam must have a high school diploma or a GED and 18 months of full-time experience in customer service providing guidance and directions. Experience that involved incidental or occasional public contact does not qualify. City residency is not required.

Station Agents assist customers and provide transit system-related information and services. They also help customers purchase and use MetroCards and observe and report station conditions.

The multiple-choice exam will test candidates' abilities to resolve customers' concerns or complaints. In addition, the test will gauge candidates' skills in interpreting timetables and subway maps; understanding subway operating procedures; applying proper measures during emergencies; job-related arithmetic; and identifying points of interest. The passing score is 70 percent.

Further information and copies of the exam notice can be obtained online at www.nyc.gov/dcas, or by writing the DCAS Application Center, 18 Washington St., New York, N.Y., 10004.
