City is Accepting Applications For Summer Interns

The city has begun to accept applications for hundreds of paid and non-paid summer internship positions.

The internships are available in a wide range of areas including education, news media, health services, budget administration, information technology, transportation, law and housing.

There is no deadline to apply, but applicants are urged to submit their resumes to specific agencies soon, because many of the 13-week jobs are highly competitive, said Mark Daly, the Department of Citywide Administrative Services' spokesman.

A list of departments participating in the intern program, agency-specific application requirements, eligibility and stipend information, and a listing of agency contacts can be obtained on-line at www.nyc.gov/internships.

Undergraduate students may by paid between $281 and $430 a week, while graduate students can receive between $424 and $717 a week, depending on the agency. Some internships offer volunteer, work-study, or academic credit, and some provide a travel stipend.

There is no centralized internship processing center. Internships are administered by staff at individual agencies. Each department has a contact person who will respond to applicants who forward a cover letter and resumé via fax or e-mail.

There are no uniform start and end dates for internship assignments. They are available from May to September for a maximum of 13 weeks. Individual agencies determine the work schedule. Summer interns also get to participate in a series of seminars featuring top city officials. At the seminars, officials present overviews of the mechanics of local government, discuss the work of specific agencies, and provide insight into issues that confront the city.
