UFA's Cassidy Opposed By Sanfilippo

Uniformed Firefighters Association President Steve Cassidy's bid for a third term is being challenged by a former UFA trustee who has criticized him in the past.

Firefighter Rudy Sanfilippo of Engine 258 has been outspoken about first responders suffering from 9/11-related illnesses and opposed the union's endorsement of President Bush in 2004.

Ballot Tally Feb. 8

Ballots went out Jan. 24 and will be counted Feb. 8. For the first time, UFA members on active duty in the military can vote via the Internet.

The winners will take office on May 1.

Candidates are barred by the union's constitution from making statements to the press about the race.

Firefighter Timothy J. Moynihan, Marine 1 is challenging incumbent William Romaka for the office of Health & Safety Officer/Sergeant-at-Arms.

The following union officers are running for re-election unopposed: Vice President James Slevin, Treasurer Robert J. Straub, Recording Secretary Joseph A. Miccio, Manhattan Trustee Daniel Murphy, Brooklyn Trustee John G. Kelly, Queens Trustee Stephen G. Humenesky, Bronx Trustee Edward Brown and Staten Island Trustee Donald J. Ruland.
