60 College Credits

By their date of appointment, candidates must have completed 60 college credits with at least a 2.0 grade-point-average. A high-school diploma and two years of full-time military service may be substituted for the college requirement.

Candidates also must be U.S. citizens and have a valid driver's license. They need to pass an entry-level written exam, a physical screening test, and a panel interview. Applicants also must pass an in-depth background investigation, which includes a $75 fingerprint fee.

In addition, the application process includes a medical exam, drug test, and a written and oral psychological evaluation. Candidates also must pass a polygraph examination and successfully complete a Police Academy curriculum.

Under the MTA Police Retirement Program, officers will only receive pension credit for prior police service which can be transferred from the New York State and local police and fire retirement system or from the New York City Police Pension Fund. Individuals can also purchase prior police service with the New York City Transit Authority Police Department.

MTA Police Officers protect the MTA transit system and are fully empowered officers under the New York State Public Authorities Law. They look after all platforms, tracks and surroundings as well as storage and maintenance facilities.
