Train Conductor Stabbed, One Person Killed

By ARI PAUL

A New York City Transit Conductor was stabbed late Jan. 10 while coming off his shift and may have killed one of the four other men involved in the struggle in self-defense.

Maurice Parks, a Conductor on the 5 line, was walking home after his shift at 11:55 p.m. when he was approached by three men at the corner of 139th St. and St. Nicholas Ave. in upper Manhattan. He was stabbed in the stomach, and in the struggle took one of the assailants' knives. He stabbed one of them and may also have fatally stabbed Flonarza Byas, who cops believe tried to intervene in the fight. The other man was taken to a hospital and is in critical condition, according to NYC Transit spokesman James Anyansi.

One of the other assailants was arrested; the third was not apprehended. Mr. Parks is recovering after undergoing surgery at Harlem Hospital.

Mr. Parks has worked for NYC Transit for 10 years, Mr. Anyansi said.
