Dear President Roberts, We received your letter regarding the MTA Budget dated November 19, 2008. More ... To the Editor: It is interesting that the City Council is still wasting time debating residency restrictions for city workers. The residency rule discriminates against minorities. Some 45,000 modestly paid public employees, mostly minorities, must live in the five boroughs, where costs are very high, or lose their jobs. More ... To the Editor: Regarding your story last week, "Paterson ... Says Budget Hole So Deep That Without Givebacks, May Need Layoffs," there is another, more creative way. There is a law on the books in New York State that provides a cheaper and better alternative. It is called, "Short-Time Compensation" or "Work Sharing Unemployment Insurance. More ... To the Editor: If there was ever a time for an early retirement package for city/state workers, it is now! It would reduce government size and expense without laying off workers who then become a non-tax-paying drain (unemployment insurance, food stamps, welfare, foreclosing) on the economy. More ...
