To the Editor: The Governor's call for labor unions to re-open their contracts isn't such a bad idea, but should come only after the following happens: 1) The bankers will re-negotiate the interest rates they charge to the city, state and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. They will agree to a longer pay-back plan, thus giving the MTA some breathing room. More ... To the Editor: I tuned in to a certain evening news program on the night of Thursday, November 13 and saw something that mysteriously seems to appear about every three years — another news story following the MTA's proposal of a fare hike that features one or two out of 38,000 transit workers slacking off on the job. I'm sure many others saw it, too. More ... To the Editor: TWU Local 100 lore has it that President John Lawe went hat in hand to see Governor Hugh Carey in 1982 to mitigate Taylor Law loss of dues check-off four months into an 18-month penalty period. More ... To the Editor: Your lead article on labor's view of the election ["Unions View Obama as Their Great Bright Hope," Nov. 14 issue] hits the mark. I am especially concerned about occupational health and safety issues.
