CITY SEWAGE TREATMENT WORKER JOBS AVAILABLE


The Department of Environmental Protection is hiring Sewage Treatment Workers at the current minimum salary of $15.01 per hour for a 40-hour workweek, the Department of Citywide Administrative Services announced.

Applications must be filed by Nov. 25. There is a $35 fee. The multiple-choice test is scheduled for Feb. 21, 2009. Applicants must be city residents within 90 days of appointment if the hiring agency has a residency requirement. A driver's license is required. Sewage Treatment Workers may be required to work shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Room for Advancement

This title has three salary steps. The second tier has a current salary of $21.61 per hour. Salary step three has a current wage of $23.38 per hour. To advance to step two, an employee must satisfactorily complete two years of service as a city Sewage Treatment Worker. To advance to step three, an employee must satisfactorily complete prescribed wastewater treatment courses and possess a state Department of Environmental Conservation Grade 1 Operator's Certificate or complete DEP prescribed wastewater treatment courses and internally approved training classes and pass alternate tests conducted by DEP.

Education Requirements

By the last day of the application period, one must have a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a state's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and three years of full-time satisfactory experience acquired within the last 10 years in the repair or installation of commercial, industrial, or large residential machinery, piping, or electrical equipment; the operation of machine tools; the repair and overhaul of engines; residential or industrial plumbing; or the operation or repair of wastewater treatment plants or associated facilities.

Alternatively, an applicant could qualify with a four-year high school diploma and at least one and a half years of full-time experience within the last five years in any of the areas above or an approved trade, technical or vocational school.

Lastly, an applicant could have an associate's degree in science or applied science, or higher degree from an accredited college with a major in environmental health, environmental technology, electrical technology, mechanical technology, or chemical technology or a related field, and one year of experience acquired within the last five years.

What Job Entails

Sewage Treatment Workers under general supervision operate, maintain and repair machinery, equipment and structures in wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations, intercepting sewers, sludge treatment and disposal facilities and associated equipment facilities. They also take samples and perform testing of sewage.

These workers will be asked to climb and descend ladders and stairways, stand for long periods of time, walk to and from repair sites, bend, crouch and kneel, as well as work on scaffolds. They will also lift and carry heavy equipment, work in confined areas and outdoors in all types of weather.
