      To the Editor: The Mayor's proposed tax increases and budget cuts are unnecessary and will prove harmful to the New York City economy.

Contract Falls Short
      To the Editor: District Council 37 has again fallen short in its contract agreement. While the two 4-percent annual increases are welcome, they fall below the rate of inflation, so members are actually seeing a reduction in purchasing power.

A Vote for DC 37 Deal
      To the Editor: The new District Council 37 contract is a good one. There will be quibbles about the additional .1 per cent at the end of the contract, but overall, considering the current economic climate, it's a good contract. It looks like there are no givebacks, so that is a plus.

An Insulting Description
      To the Editor: In response to Michael J. Gorman's letter last week, calling a Sanitation Worker a garbage man went out in the '80s — about the time they started earning more than Police Officers. Many New Yorkers who use that term mean no insult or harm. Then there are those who mean exactly that. You, sir, are among the latter.
