Sanit Upgrades Marino: To Top Chief Position

By TOMMY HALLISSEY

Sanitation Commissioner John J. Doherty Oct. 29 announced the promotion of a 27-year DSNY veteran to the rank of three-star Chief.

PHILIP MARINO: Continues rise through ranks. PHILIP MARINO: Continues rise through ranks. Chief Philip Marino joined the department in 1981 as a Sanitation Worker assigned to the Manhattan 7 District Garage, which covers Manhattan Valley, the Upper West Side, and Lincoln Square. He rose through the ranks to various supervisory positions, including Bronx Borough Chief in charge of all refuse and recycling collections, street cleaning, and snow-removal services in the borough. Chief Marino most recently was Special Assistant to First Deputy Commissioner Michael A. Bimonte.

"With his expertise in DSNY operational issues, Chief Marino provides solid guidance and has devised sound solutions regarding the department's day-to-day delivery of services," said Commissioner Doherty in a statement.

Among his achievements, Chief Marino served as the department's liaison to the Office of Emergency Management following the 9/11 attacks in 2001, and helped secure a 40-year agreement with Gateway National Park for the site at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, which is now home to DSNY's Ronald A. DeCarlo Training Center. Chief Marino was also recently honored as the DSNY Columbia Association's "Italian-American of the Year."
