4 Bridge/Tunnel Officers Honored For Special Acts

By ARI PAUL

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Sept. 26 honored four of its Bridge and Tunnel officers for bravery and life-saving acts.

Bridge and Tunnel Officer Darnell Eason and Sgt. Caspere Caratelli, while based at the Queens Midtown Tunnel last October, helped police officers stop a knife-wielding assailant.

While on duty at the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, Officer John Morano saved a woman's life when he approached a vehicle and found the victim with a self-inflicted knife wound to her wrist. He stopped the bleeding before medical support arrived at the scene.

And former Triborough Bridge-based Officer Akeem Sadiku came to the rescue of a truck driver who had suffered a seizure while on the road. As the authority described it: "As the truck was rolling into traffic, Officer Sadiku hopped onto the running board of the vehicle, opened the driver's side door and managed to apply the brake while keeping the driver from falling out. His actions helped avert a dangerous situation for other motorists on the plaza and saved the truck driver from serious injury."

Mr. Sadiku is now training to become a Firefighter at the Fire Academy.
