Cop Fired, Convicted For Writing Repeated Bogus Summonses

A Police Officer was convicted May 29 of issuing fake summonses and sentenced to five years' probation, according to the Bronx District Attorney's Office.

Former Police Officer Joseph Harmon resigned from the NYPD Housing Unit's PSA-7 May 19, three days after his arrest following an investigation by the Internal Affairs Bureau. He pleaded guilty to one count of Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the first degree, a Class E felony.

Mr. Harmon admitted he had written summonses to civilians who had not violated any laws, alleging that they had been smoking in public buildings, urinating in public or consuming alcohol in public from an open container.

Prior to his February 2006 assignment in the Bronx, Mr. Harmon worked at PSA-9 in Queens in July 2005, where he also committing similar crimes that were covered in his Bronx plea agreement.
