To the Editor: In an article published in your Feb. 8 edition, you reported that Queens Borough President Helen Marshall, in her State of the Borough report, had major concerns regarding the Fire Department's response times for Queens. To the Editor: In response to the letter by Paul Mannix (''Sound the Alarm on Fire Test," Jan. 25 issue), we want to set the record straight: the Firefighter exam and the Fire Department's recruiting campaign have been open and fair. They will strengthen the department by helping it become more reflective of the community it serves. More ... To the Editor: I am the father of a city Firefighter. I have read the letters by Chief Mannix; John Coombs, President of the Vulcan Society, and Chief Gala Jr. I, and I'm sure most New Yorkers would agree, do not care what nationality or gender a member of the FDNY is when that person is trying to save a life. More ... To the Editor: Chief Del Coward misses the point of Chief Mannix's letter. The current entrance exam was a joke and there is no longer a competitive physical exam. The reduction in standards of the civil service entrance exam has and will continue to negatively impact the FDNY. More ... To the Editor: It seems Chicken Little has ruffled a few feathers. Battalion Chief Delbert Coward's Feb. 8 letter - which cannot be described as a rebuttal to my Jan. 25 letter, since he doesn't rebut or refute any of my points - isn't really worthy of a response, but I think one is necessary if only to reiterate an important point I made in a letter a few years back. More ... To the Editor: The recent articles on TWU Day Care got transit workers buzzing about the current administration at Local 100. Many of my co-workers argued that the limited reimbursement of $200 per month for only 400 qualifying members a year comes up way short. That's less than half of the MTA contribution to the fund, and many feel it was not worth the 0. More ... |
