MOTOR VEHICLE REP POSTS OPEN IN CITY

Starting Salary Is $28G; Need H.S. Diploma; Applications Must Be In by Jan. 22 For Feb. 23 Exam

The state Department of Civil Service is accepting applications for an exam leading to Motor Vehicle Representative jobs.

Applications must be postmarked by Jan. 22, 2008. The written test is scheduled to be held Feb. 23. The starting salary is $28,733.

Where Jobs Exist

The positions are available in The Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. Separate filing is also open for Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, and Westchester counties.

Appointees assigned to the downstate region receive an additional $1,302 annual location-pay adjustment.

Due to the expected large number of applications, individuals will be assigned to either the Feb. 23 or 24 morning and afternoon test dates. Applicants' admission notices will state which session in advance.

To qualify, on or before Feb. 23 candidates must have a high school diploma or a GED and one year of experience involving extensive face-to-face contact with the general public in the areas of customer service, sales, or general clerical work.

Individuals must describe their work experience in detail on the application form. Experience limited to telephone contact and/or written correspondence is not considered qualifying, according to the exam notice. Appropriate part-time and volunteer experience will be accepted on a prorated basis, according to the exam notice.

Candidates can substitute 30 college credits for the one year of required experience. Individuals must have completed those credits before applying.

College Substitute

They must provide the name and location of the college and a list of courses that they successfully completed with the corresponding number of credit hours, either by listing them in the "Remarks" section of the on-line or paper application, on a separate piece of paper, or by sending a copy of their transcript with their application to the Department of Civil Service, Alfred E. Smith Office Building, Albany, New York 12239, ATTN: S5BXO. They can also fax the information to 518-473-8887.

The positions are available in the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles' License and Registration issuing offices or Traffic Violations Bureau offices in the Greater New York metropolitan area, according to the exam notice.

The written exam will test candidates' abilities to make calculations involving money and arithmetic computations in a DMV office context. The test will also gauge candidates' skills in coding/decoding information, providing customer service, and reading and comprehension.

Can Use Calculators

Individuals can bring a hand-held battery or solar-powered calculator to use during the test. The passing score is 70 percent.

New York State residence is not required. There is a $20 filing fee. Individuals who are fluent in Spanish can apply separately for positions requiring that skill.
