BUS MECHANIC
JOBS OPEN IN NYC TRANSIT The Department of Citywide Administrative Services has started to accept applications for an exam leading to Bus Maintainer mechanic jobs at New York City Transit. The last day to apply is Dec. 26. Practical testing is expected to begin April 9, according to DCAS. Job Requirements The starting salary is $25.50 an hour, which rises to $27.68 an hour after three years on the job. By the last day of filing, candidates must have four years of full-time experience as a mechanic performing collision work, body and fender repairs, and automotive welding on passenger cars, trucks or buses. Individuals with a degree from a trade, technical or vocational high school, or community college with a major course of study totaling 600 hours in auto mechanics or a closely related field can also apply. The school must be accredited by the state Department of Education or another comparable government agency. The following experience is not considered qualifying: automotive engine and transmission mechanic, car or truck assembly line mechanic, dealership make-ready mechanic, gas station attendant, specialty replacement shop mechanic, salvage and junkyard mechanic, and sheet metal or iron worker. Nonresidents Eligible Appointees must pass a medical evaluation and a drug and alcohol screening. City residency is not required. Hires also need to have a valid New York State Class B commercial driver's license or a learner's permit for that classification. Serious moving violations, license suspensions, or an accident record may disqualify. The practical exam will measure candidates' abilities to maintain and repair bodies, undercarriages and associate components of buses, cars and trucks. The test will also gauge candidates' skills in body sheeting repair, preparation and painting; the proper use and selection of tools, machinery, and materials; and reading and interpreting specifications and drawings.
