WTC Casualty: Mourn Sergeant

Friends, family members, and colleagues gathered Nov. 8 to pay their last respects to Sgt. Michael Ryan, who died from cancer after spending days sifting through World Trade Center rubble.

Sergeant Ryan, 41, passed away Nov. 5 of Hodgkins lymphoma, the Daily News reported. He worked in the NYPD's Warrant Squad, which searched through the debris at the Staten Island landfill after 9/11. During that period, he was also assigned to the morgue, Ground Zero, and traffic posts, according to the NYPD.

The funeral was held at the St. Thomas More R. C. Church, 115 Kings Highway in Hauppauge.
