Farm Product Inspector Jobs Are Available

The State Department of Civil Service is accepting applications for an exam leading to Farm Products Grading Inspector 1 jobs.

Applications must be postmarked by Dec. 10. The written test is scheduled for Jan. 12, 2008. There is a $30 filing fee.

Job Requirements

The starting salary is $36,228. Appointees who work in the five boroughs or in Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, or Westchester counties will receive an additional $1,302 annual downstate adjustment.

To qualify, on or before the date of the written exam candidates must have an associate's degree in agriculture, agriculture business, agronomy, animal science, biology, biological science, botany, conservation, dairy science, entomology, environmental health, fishery science or aquaculture, food marketing or food science.

Multiple other combinations of work-related experience and college courses are also considered qualifying. Candidates should consult the exam notice for a complete list.

Farm Products Grading Inspectors examine farm products at shipping, processing and receiving points in order to determine and certify the grade, condition, and size. They inspect poultry, eggs, and seafood.

Some Jobs Downstate

These positions are available in the Department of Agriculture and Markets in various locations throughout the state including in the downstate region.

The written exam will test candidates' abilities to provide good customer service and knowledge in arithmetic calculation with a calculator. The test will also gauge candidates' skills in office record-keeping and understanding and interpreting written material. The passing score is 70 percent.
