Starts at $28G; Require College Or Experience; Can Also Apply For Bus Maintainer, Paralegal Job

The Department of Citywide Administrative Services is accepting applications for an exam leading to Eligibility Specialist positions with the Human Resources Administration.

Applications must be submitted by Nov. 27. That is also the last day to apply for four hiring exams and six promotion titles. The open-competitive positions are: Bus Maintainer, Group A, Car Inspector, Paralegal Aide, and Structure Maintainer, Group E.

Promotionals Open

The promotion titles are: Assistant Resident Buildings Superintendent, Computer Operations Manager, Computer Systems Manager, Maintenance Supervisor, Group E, Police Officer, and Supervisor Glazier.

The starting pay for Eligibility Specialist is $28,368. The multiple-choice test is set for Feb. 9, 2008. There is a $30 filing fee.

To qualify, by the last day of filing individuals must have 60 college credits or a high school diploma or GED with two years of work-related experience. Applicants should consult the exam notice for a complete list of acceptable experience, which includes work as a bookkeeper, bank teller, and dealing with social service agencies.

The exam will test candidates' abilities to understand written sentences and paragraphs and obtain pertinent data from documents, printouts, files and coded information. The test will also gauge applicants' skills in applying interviewing techniques in face-to-face client contact or by telephone, applying and interpreting rules to specific problems, and basic math.

Must Become Residents

Eligibility Specialists determine and substantiate the initial and continuing eligibility of persons seeking public assistance from the city. Appointees must be city residents within 90 days of hiring.

There are three assignment levels within the title. After appointment, employees may be assigned to the higher level at the discretion of the agency, according to the exam notice.

Candidates who speak a foreign language may be selectively certified and given preferred consideration for specific positions that require that ability.

Further information and copies of the exam notice can be obtained on-line at www.nyc.gov/dcas, or by calling 212-669-1357.

Candidates can also apply on-line at: www.nyc.gov/examsforjobs. They should follow the onscreen application instructions for submitting their information and filing fee, which can be paid via credit card. DCAS does not accept applications in person from candidates.
