PORT AUTHORITY POLICE FILING THROUGH OCT. 5 Applications must be submitted by midnight Oct. 5. The written exam will be administered in November. The last Port Authority Police Officer exam was held four years ago. Job Requirements To qualify, candidates must be at least 21 years old by Nov. 1 and not have attained their 35th birthday by the time they are appointed. In order to take the written test, candidates must have a high school diploma or GED. Candidates who pass the written exam must have 60 college credits or two years of military service to continue through the screening process. At the time of appointment, candidates must be U.S. citizens, residents of New York or New Jersey, and have a driver's license. The written exam tests candidates' reasoning abilities. The test may also include questions regarding ordering, memorization, English language usage, written comprehension and mathematical reasoning. Background Check Before being appointed, candidates must pass a background investigation. The investigation includes a review of the candidate's entire academic and employment history, including a fingerprint check. Those convicted of a felony are not eligible. To be appointed, candidates must also pass a medical evaluation. Vision, hearing, and body mass index tests are administered during the evaluation. Candidates must also pass a psychological evaluation before appointment, including a written tests and interviews. Those appointed must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays. After completing the police academy, Port Authority Police Officers are given a one-year probationary period. Officers may be assigned to Port Authority airports, bridges and tunnel facilities. PA Police Officers may be assigned to agency facilities such as the Holland and Lincoln tunnels, Bayonne and Goethals bridges, George Washington Bridge and Bus Station, Outerbridge Crossing, Kennedy, Newark Liberty, LaGuardia and Teterboro airports, PA Bus Terminal, and the World Trade Center site.
