Criteria for Applying To qualify, by the last day of filing candidates must have three years of experience as a plumber's helper or apprentice obtained within the last 12 years. Various levels of work-related education can be used to satisfy the experience requirement. Candidates should consult the exam notice for a complete listing. Appointees must be city residents within 90 days of the date they are appointed. Some agencies, however, do not require city residency. Persons deemed unqualified will not have their application fee refunded and their tests will not be graded. The exam will test candidates' skills in plumbing work, as well as how to properly use tools, fittings and equipment. The exam will also gauge candidates' skills in general plumbing work including installation, repairs, and reading and understanding elementary plans, drawing and instructions.
