EMERGENCY DISPATCHER AMONG STATE POSITIONS Starting Pay Is $30,376; Need Year Experience; Job Counselor And Customer Rep Posts Offered The state Civil Service Department is accepting applications for exams leading to jobs as Communications Technician I, Jobs Program Specialist Trainee, Labor Services Representative Trainee, and Unemployment Insurance Reviewing Examiner Trainee. Applications must be postmarked by Sept. 10. The written tests are scheduled for Oct. 13. There is a $30 filing fee for each position. Dispatcher Criteria The starting salary for Communications Technician I is $30,376. By the date of the written exam, applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and one year of experience as a public safety dispatcher. Examples of qualifying experience are: police, fire and emergency medical dispatching. The following types of experience are not qualifying: using paging systems, cell phones, intercom systems, or CBs. The jobs are available in the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the State Emergency Management Office. Communications Technicians provide information and other support services to police officers and emergency personnel by operating radio and data terminals, including the New York Statewide Police Information Network. They also respond to emergency calls and maintain law-enforcement and other administrative records. The exam will test candidates' abilities to retain and comprehend spoken information from emergency calls, understand and interpret written material, and follow directions. The test will also gauge candidates' skills in coding and decoding information and radio operations and dispatching procedures. The passing score is 70 percent. Job Specialist Details The starting salary for Job Program Specialist Trainee I is $34,260. Individuals who are fluent in Spanish language are urged to apply. By Oct. 13, candidates must have a bachelor's degree or an associate's degree and two years of experience working for a county government or contractor for Welfare to Work programs in the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. The following types of qualifying temporary assistance programs include: Family Assistance, Safety Net Assistance, Welfare to Work programs, Supplemental Security Income, Emergency Assistance to Families or Adults, Food Stamps, or Home Energy Assistance. The positions are available in the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance in many locations throughout the state. Job Program Specialist Trainees interview clients to evaluate the nature of services needed. They also help them find jobs by obtaining a complete work history including job experience, education, skills, salary ranges, and job preferences. What Test Covers The written exam will test candidates' abilities evaluating conclusions in light of known facts, interacting with the public, interviewing skills, and preparing, understanding and interpreting written material. The starting salary for Labor Services Representative Trainee I is $34,260. Persons who are fluent in Spanish, Chinese, Korean languages are urged to apply. To qualify, by Oct. 13 applicants must have a bachelor's degree. The positions exist in the New York State Department of Labor in many locations throughout the state. The traineeship is two years. Trainees who successfully meet standards after completion of the first year advance to Trainee 2, which pays $36,228. Upon completion of the second year, they would be promoted to the full journeyman title, which pays $40,424. Trainees learn how to interview and elicit information from customers to ascertain services appropriate to meet their needs. Those services could include: eligibility determination for unemployment insurance benefits and referral to job opportunities or training programs. The written exam tests similar skills as the evaluation leading to Job Program Specialist Trainee I jobs. The starting salary for Unemployment Insurance Reviewing Examiner Trainee is $34,260. The positions are in the New York State Department of Labor in Albany. They review correspondence from employers relating to matters of tax liability, experience ratings and coverage, and make appropriate determinations based on the information presented. Upon successful completion of the one-year traineeship program, they advance to Unemployment Insurance Reviewing Examiner, Grade 16, which pays $40,424, without further examination.
