Police, Correction, Probation Officer Jobs Offered

Exams for Clerical Associate, Station Agent, and Secretary head the list of 120 civil service hiring and promotion tests the city is scheduled to administer during the fiscal year that began July 1.

Other popular exams due to be held over the next year include those for Plumber, Stock Worker, Evidence and Property Control Specialist, and Bus Operator.

Promotion exams for Police Sergeant and Correction Captain are scheduled for city employees, as well as tests for Battalion Chief, Captain (Fire), and Warden. Civilian promotion exams set for next year include Car Inspector, Mate (Ferry), Resident Buildings Superintendent, and Associate Project Manager.

File Continuously for Cop, CO

Filing is now continuous for Police Officer and Correction Officer, meaning individuals can apply at any time and be assigned to take a test a few months later. There are three exams set for each title next year.

The Department of Citywide Administrative Services is planning to unveil a walk-in pilot testing program later this summer. DCAS originally expected to open the center last January. The program will enable eligible candidates to take certain exams at any time at a specified lower Manhattan location.

In October, DCAS will accept applications for an exam leading to Secretary positions. Based on the prior exam notice, by the date of appointment candidates must have a high school diploma or GED and be able to type accurately at a minimum speed of 35 words per minute.

Filing for Probation Officer is set to begin on Feb. 6. According to the last exam notice, by the last day of filing - Feb. 26 - candidates must have a graduate degree in social work, education, law, sociology, or psychology. Work-related experience can be substituted for parts of that prerequisite. Candidates should consult the updated exam notice after filing begins for a complete listing.

Subway Station Agent Jobs

In March, filing is scheduled for Station Agent jobs at New York City Transit. According to the last exam notice, by the last day of filing candidates must have a high school diploma or GED and 18 months of full-time experience helping resolve customer complaints and providing guidance and directions. The starting salary is $15.47 an hour, which rises to $21.64 an hour after three years.
