Johnny-Come-Lately

To the Editor:

The Chief is correct in its June 22 editorial that Local 100 President Roger Toussaint undermines the concept of union democracy by using a flimsy excuse to strip John Samuelsen of his shop steward position. I take issue, however, with your claim that John Samuelsen "led the charge" against the contract, which was voted down by seven votes after the transit strike.

Everyone from former Vice Presidents Bill Pelletier and Ainsley Stewart to former Local 100 Recording Secretary Noel Acevedo and Steve Downs was very vocal and out in front against a contract that required us to pay for part of our medical and didn't provide us much in wage increases.

Come to think of it, Mr. Samuelsen had no problem with Roger's management style until he deemed it a political opportunity to run for a higher office. When my vice president, Bill Pelletier of TA Surface, was shut out of meetings and denied support to run his division, John remained silent.

I have a list of 60 union reps and activists who were alienated by Toussaint over the years. I'm glad John Samuelsen came to his senses, but he came to the party rather late.
