CITY PARAMEDIC/EMT FILING UNTIL JUNE 26

EMTs Begin At $27G; Must Pass Training Course; Paramedic Job Pays $37G; Requires Certification

Filing is open until June 26 for evaluations leading to Emergency Medical Technician jobs and Paramedic positions.

There are no written tests. Candidates for the positions will be graded based on their education and experience.

Test Requirements

Starting pay for Emergency Medical Specialist-EMT is $27,295. By the last day of filing, candidates must have a high school diploma or a GED and a valid New York State Department of Health EMT-B or EMT-D certificate or an advanced EMT-4 Paramedic certificate.

Appointees must complete an EMS Academy training course, which includes a multiple-choice written exam administered by the FDNY Division of Training and New York State Department of Health Clinical Skills Station practical test. Individuals serving as provisional paramedics with the FDNY do not have to take the tests again.

The starting salary for Emergency Medical Specialist-Paramedic is $37,346. By the last day of the application period, candidates must have a high school diploma or GED and a valid New York State Department of Health advanced EMT certificate, along with a valid New York City Regional Emergency Medical Advisory Committee certificate. The certificate must be maintained for the duration of employment.

By the time of appointment, candidates for either position must have a valid driver's license. Serious moving violations, license suspensions, or an accident record may be disqualifying. During the job's probationary period, those appointed must take the Emergency Vehicle Operations Course. Candidates also must pass a drug-and-alcohol screening and psychological and physical agility tests. City residency is not required.

911 Experience Counts

Test scores will be determined based on candidates' education and experience. Those who meet the minimum qualifications will receive a score of 70 points. Candidates for the EMT position with two years or more of experience with the city 911 system will get 100 points. Paramedics must have three years of experience to reach the maximum score. Part-time experience will be accepted on a pro-rated basis.

Filing is also open until June 26 for Assistant Retirement Benefits Examiner, Bridge Operator, Estimator (Mechanical), and Public Health Nurse.
