A Vote for Rudy

To the Editor:

I'm a little behind in my reading of The Chief because as a subscriber I have it delivered here in Florida and it arrives almost a week late. However, I am getting just a little sick and tired of the access The Chief allows to this Michael Gorman.

Is there a subject on which this individual fails to offer an opinion? Is this man so well-versed that The Chief offers him space regardless of the issue?

Most recently (May 18 letter) Mr. Gorman opines about former Mayor Giuliani's qualifications to be President of the United States. While I don't agree either as to what happened with the cops' contract under Giuliani, what does that or his marital situation have to do with anything?

What gives Mr. Gorman the right or qualification to pass judgment on either subject? Has he ever negotiated a contract? Is he a psychologist or marriage counselor?

Why don't we discuss the fact that this was a Mayor who took a city that most experts thought was unmanageable and proved them wrong? Is there any objective person who would say that the city was not a much better place in which to live and work after he left office than before he took office?

Perhaps Mr. Gorman is right and if Rudy Giuliani is elected President he will be seen as "The Ugly American."

It is also feasible, however, given Mr. Giuliani's record, that he will turn things around and with Giuliani as President we will be a country that is feared by our adversaries and respected by our allies.

WILLIAM L. McKECHNIE

Editor's note: Mr. McKechnie is the former president of the Transit Police Benevolent Association.
