BRIDGE OPERATOR JOBS OFFERED UNTIL JUNE 26 Applications must be submitted by June 26. The starting salary is $27,558 a year. There are two assignment levels within the title. After appointment, employees may be promoted to the higher level at the discretion of the agency. No Written Test There is no written or practical exam. Candidates will be rated based on their education and experience. To qualify, by the last day of filing candidates must have a high school diploma or a GED. They also need one year of full-time mechanical experience in the operation, maintenance and/or repair of one of the following: industrial equipment, construction equipment, or movable bridges. The work requirement can be substituted with one year or 150 hours of technical education in the electrical or mechanical field acquired in a trade school or vocational high school approved by the state's Department of Education or a comparable government agency. Individuals are responsible for determining whether or not they meet the qualifications. There is a $30 nonrefundable filing fee that is payable only by money order to DCAS. At the time of appointment, candidates must have a valid New York State driver's license. Individuals with moving violations, license suspensions, or an accident record may be disqualified. Appointees must be city residents within 90 days of the date of being hired. Candidates also must meet certain medical requirements established to determine whether they can perform the job. Test scores will be determined based on each candidate's prior work and education qualifications. Additional points will be granted for added experience, with part-time work rated accordingly. Bridge Operators control light signals and traffic gates, report any malfunctions or obstructions, and sweep and clean roadways. They also remove snow and ice from the bridge road and footwalks, operate sump pumps as needed, and report auto accidents. They are required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
