CITY PARAMEDIC/EMT FILING TO START JUNE 6

EMTs Begin At $31G; June 26 Filing Deadline; Paramedic Job Pays $37G; Requires Certification

The Department of Citywide Administrative Services will begin accepting applications June 6 for evaluations leading to Emergency Medical Technician jobs and Paramedic positions.

Filing is set to close June 26. There are no written tests. Candidates for the positions will be graded based on their education and experience.

Likely Requirements

Starting pay for Emergency Medical Specialist-EMT is $31,273. Based on the prior exam notice, by the last day of filing, candidates must have a high school diploma or a GED and a valid New York State Department of Health EMT-B or EMT-D certificate or an advanced EMT-4 Paramedic certificate.

The starting salary for Emergency Medical Specialist-Paramedic is $37,712. According to the prior exam notice, by the last day of the application period, candidates must have a high school diploma or GED and a valid New York State Department of Health advanced EMT certificate, along with a valid New York City Regional Emergency Medical Advisory Committee certificate. The certificate must be maintained for the duration of employment.

By the time of appointment, candidates for either position must have a valid driver's license. Serious moving violations, license suspensions, or an accident record may be disqualifying. During the job's probationary period, those appointed must take the Emergency Vehicle Operations Course. Candidates also must pass a drug-and-alcohol screening and psychological and physical agility tests. City residency is not required.

Test scores will be determined based on candidates' education and experience. Those who meet the minimum qualifications will receive a score of 70 points. Candidates for the EMT position with two years or more of experience with the city 911 system will get 100 points. Paramedics must have three years of experience to reach the maximum score. Part-time experience will be accepted on a pro-rated basis.

Filing is also set to open June 6 for Assistant Retirement Benefits Examiner, Bridge Operator, and Public Health Nurse.
