ADDICTION COUNSELOR JOBS NOW AVAILABLE Applications must be submitted by May 22. The starting salary is $38,541. There is no written or practical exam. Candidates will be rated based on their education and work experience. Job Requirements By the last day of filing, candidates must have a bachelor's degree, including 24 credits in psychology, sociology, social work, or a related behavioral science field and one year of full-time experience working in an addiction treatment program. Various other forms of education and experience are considered qualifying; candidates should consult the exam notice for a complete list. The education prerequisite must be obtained by June 30. Individuals who meet the basic requirements will receive 70 points. Persons with additional work-related experience will be rated higher. The experience must be obtained by the last day of filing. Candidates who speak a foreign language may be selectively certified and given preferred consideration for specific positions that require that ability. In addition, candidates who are currently certified as New York State Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselors may be selectively certified. Night, Weekend Work Addiction Counselors participate in the implementation of an alcoholism treatment, methadone maintenance or drug-free program in a hospital or satellite clinic. They engage in diagnostic, treatment, and consultative activities. Counselors may have to work nights, weekends, and holidays. There is a $40 filing fee. City residency is not required for the position. All eligibles will be required to undergo and pass a medical exam prior to the date of appointment. In addition, candidates will be subject to a drug screening prior to being hired. There are two assignment levels within the title. After appointment, employees may be assigned to the higher level at the discretion of the agency, according to the exam notice. May 22 is also the last day to file for three other open-competitive exams. Those titles and their starting salaries are: Cement Mason, $34 an hour; Estimator (Electrical), $44,495; and Signal Maintainer, $26.35 an hour. DCAS is also accepting applications for a promotion exam leading to Cement Mason jobs at city agencies and HHC.
