Weekly: Apply Now for Summer Intern Slots The internships are available in a wide range of areas including education, news media, parks, health services, budget administration, information technology, law and housing. Expanded Opportunities "The number of spots has grown since last month," said Mark Daly, the spokesman for the Department of Citywide Administrative Services. "At the same time, some spots have been filled, including [at] the Probation Department." There is no deadline to apply, but students are urged to submit their resumes soon, because many of the 13-week internships are highly competitive, Mr. Daly added. Undergraduate students may by paid between $281 and $430 a week, while graduate students can receive between $424 and $717 a week, depending on the agency. Some internships offer volunteer, work study, or academic credit, and some provide a travel stipend. 13-Week Limits There is no centralized internship processing center. Internships are administered by staff at individual agencies. Each department has a contact person who will respond to applicants who forward a cover letter and resume via fax or e-mail. There are no uniform start and end dates for internship assignments. They are available from May to September for a maximum of 13 weeks. Individual agencies determine the work schedule. A list of departments participating in the intern program, agency-specific application requirements, eligibility and stipend information, and a listing of agency contacts can be obtained online at www.nyc.gov/internships. Summer interns also get to participate in a series of seminars featuring top city officials. At the seminars, officials present overviews of the mechanics of local government, discuss the work of specific agencies, and provide insight into issues that confront the city. | |||||
