A CARSON SHOW RE-RUN:
After a community board in Bedford-Stuyvesant voted to name a street in memory of Sonny Carson, the proposal encountered opposition in the City Council because of the late black activist's more radical actions and statements, which ranged from a criminal conviction for kidnapping and attempted murder to leading a battle against cops near the Brooklyn Bridge during a 1989 march and playing pivotal roles in the Korean grocery boycott of 1990 and the Crown Heights riots a year later. When the Council's Parks and Recreation Committee April 19 voted to separate the proposal from a group of 51 other street namings that it approved, some of his supporters disrupted the meeting by attempting to unfurl a banner at the front of the City Council Chamber, leading to a scuffle with Council security and the NYPD. For further details on the confrontation and Mr. Carson's less-than-admirable past, see Richard Steier's Razzle Dazzle column.
