Goldstein Given $500G Award From Carnegie

The Carnegie Corporation bestowed upon City University of New York Chancellor Matthew Goldstein its 2007 Academic Leadership award last week, which comes with a $500,000 grant that Mr. Goldstein can use for his academic priorities.

The award honors leaders in the world of higher education who have shown a commitment to liberal arts and curricular innovations, especially those with a multidisciplinary approach that aim to bridge the divide between theory and practice. It also pays tribute to educators committed to k-12 school reform.

Carnegie President Vartan Gregorian pointed to CUNY's William E. Macaulay Honors College, which offers free tuition and other benefits to the city's highest-achieving students, and Mr. Goldstein's championing of CUNY's "Decade of Science," which has dedicated $1 billion to build new and expanded science facilities.

Carnegie officials also noted that CUNY formed partnerships with the city Department of Education and helped to develop a network of 15 high schools housed on its campuses. Mr. Goldstein is a supporter of the Mayor's controversial efforts to reform the city's school system.
